Can I take my driving test in an electric car?

Yes, you can take your driving test in an electric car, but keep in mind that you’ll be given a category B auto licence if you pass. If you want to get a category B licence that allows you to drive manual cars, you’ll have to take (and pass) your driving test in a manual.

A category B licence will enable you to drive manual, automatic, and electric cars. If you have a category B auto licence, you’ll still be able to drive electric vehicles, but you’ll be restricted to automatic petrol cars.

All electric cars are in effect Automatic, they do not have gears or clutches.

Deciding which type of driving test to take will become more of an issue in the future for the younger driver, On the one hand everything is moving in the direction of electric, However this creates a dilema for the 17+ drivers thinking about which way to go and keen to embrace the future of technology.

Can you afford to buy into the electric eco system?
By taking the test in an electric car you will be severly limited in your choice of car, you won't be able to drive any current manual ICE vehicle which is likely to be more in your price range.
If you really want to take a test in an electric car can you find an instructor with a suitable vehicle ?
Car insurance will likely be a prohibitive factor, EV's tend to have higher insurance costs and for the younger driver insurance costs are already a heavy burden.

Perhaps it's too early to make any decision, even the DVSA have not yet adjusted the test specifically for electric vehicles, they are currently just classified as an automatic vehicle. So what happens regarding the show me tell me questions, our understanding is that they have not changed, does this mean you could be asked about checking the oil as if the car had an ICE engine, surely not?

Guess we will have to wait and see how things pan out.
